El Salvador Volunteering

  • The Local Zone of Peace Tour: Delegates on the annual Local Zone of Peace Tour spend a couple of days working in solidarity with the communities they visit.  For more information on the tour, click here.

  • Group Volunteers: If your group or organization wants to volunteer, please contact us directly. We frequently host special groups of students and professionals, who engage in a variety of different activities according to their interests.

  • Individual Volunteers: If you want to volunteer as an individual, we generally ask that you make a minimum 9 month commitment to work in El Salvador.

The majority of our individual volunteers will be engaged in the valuable work of teaching English or other subjects. However, the three-month commitment does allow for other contributions such as assisting with the community census, or completing basic tasks for a specific agricultural or environmental project. Every opportunity, however, will enable each volunteer to turn his or her commitment into a learning experience, improve Spanish speaking skills, and connect with the community in which he or she is working.

Volunteers with special skills (e.g., biology or engineering), or those committed to staying at least 9 months, may get the opportunity to engage in more specialized project-oriented work.

    To apply send us:
    • A copy of your resume in Spanish with three references (email)
    • A cover letter in Spanish describing why you want to volunteer with the FSSCA in El Salvador (email)
    • This form (email okay to begin process; this form needs to be printed and signed to complete the formal application)

We will only accept applications from volunteers with advanced Spanish knowledge.

If you have skills that are particularly needed in El Salvador, exceptions are sometimes made on the 9 month minimum commitment. These skills may also be applied to projects outside English teaching as mentioned above.

In the past, volunteers have carried out many roles in the rural communities where we work, including time as engineers on a water pumping project, teaching English, working with youths, and as science teachers in community schools.

Volunteering from where you are

There are several ways you can volunteer without traveling to El Salvador.

  • Local Support Groups: Groups of supporters regularly hold benefit events in Seattle, Chicago, and elsewhere.  You can get involved with them in raising money to help poor communities in El Salvador.   Please contact us for more information.

  • Translation: If you are an experienced translator, please let us know.  We would love to have a volunteer's help.  Please contact us for more information.

  • Letter Writing: In less than a month after the devastating earthquakes in El Salvador, it had virtually disappeared from the news.  Letters to your local newspaper, and to your representatives in Congress, can help remind people that El Salvador and other developing nations need our support.
