| The environment represents the future
to the Coordinadora. Their region includes one of El Salvador's
few remaining natural areas: the Bay of Jiquilisco, which in 2005
received recognition as a special protected area from both El Salvador's
government and the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands. Each community
is involved in grassroots project design that responds to local
needs. The communities have responded by organizing projects which
include waste composting for fertilizer, irrigation techniques to
conserve water, wood saving stoves, marine life repopulation in
the Bay of Jiquilisco, and the Romero Memorial Tree Project, which
plants native mangrove trees previously cut down for firewood. |
