Peaceful Protesters Charged with Terrorism & Held as Political Prisoners

The Salvadoran government has flirted for many years with privatizing the national water system. Such privatizations elsewhere in Latin America have reduced access to safe, potable water, particularly for poor and rural communities. On Monday, July 2, 2007, in response to a peaceful protest against water privatization, the government arrested fourteen grassroots leaders and charged them with terrorism.

The FSSCA joins with other US-El Salvador organizations in denouncing these events and urging immediate action.
